Magik Theater Reopens in San Antonio

After a six-month hiatus, Magik Theater in San Antonio reopens on Saturday with a show based on Eric Carle’s ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The 132-year-old venue has undergone a $2.2 million transformation, funded through the city’s 2022 bond program, a capital campaign, and three local foundations.

Renovations and Improvements

The renovation includes the installation of 514 new seats, new carpeting, and an extended accessibility platform with removable seats for wheelchairs. The theater’s previous seating came from the Lila Cockrell Theater after its renovation. The original wrought-iron railing system along the elevated balcony has been painted black, and new heating and air conditioning and fire safety systems have been installed.

The theater’s CEO, Mel Zarb-Cousin, expressed her excitement about the reopening, stating that the new space is ‘really, really incredible’ and that the theater is ‘so lucky’ to be situated in a park in the center of the city. The theater will continue to host various events, including summer camps and performances, such as ‘If You Give a Mouse a Cookie’ and ‘The Grinch Who Stole Christmas’.
