New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) alerted families on Thursday afternoon about Friday’s planned early dismissal due to predicted extreme heat. Transportation was provided to students who normally ride the bus, and there were no afterschool programs.
NHPS spokesperson Justin Harmon confirmed that transportation played a key role in leading to early dismissals at all city public schools. The heat projections were such that it seemed likely they would experience excessive temperatures in a number of buildings, and dismissing a larger number of schools individually would be disruptive to transportation schedules for the entire network.
This is the second time in roughly three weeks that extreme heat has led to early dismissals at all city public schools. The district previously dismissed students two hours early on May 20, as temperatures reached the high 80s.
