Magic Mountain ski hill in Idaho plans December reopening after community fundraiser

Magic Mountain, a small family‑owned ski hill nestled in the Magic Valley of Idaho, announced plans to reopen this winter after a season lost to a lack of snow. The Miller family, owners of the hill for two decades, said community donations raised in a May fundraiser have provided the cash needed to keep the operation afloat and fund critical upgrades.

Community support fuels comeback

“I’m just so grateful for this community – they really responded and helped out during these difficult times,” said Gary Miller, who runs the hill with his family. The fundraiser, organized by local volunteers, collected enough money to cover outstanding bills and ensure the hill can welcome skiers again on Dec. 1, provided the weather cooperates.

Upgrades made during downtime

During the two‑year closure, the Millers used the downtime to improve safety and comfort for families. New restraining bars have been installed on all chair lifts, a fresh set of generators and upgraded wiring were added to the lodge, and a newer carpet was laid in the beginner area. Two new beginner carpets are now ready for use, making the hill more welcoming for young children.

Looking ahead with snow‑making plans

To reduce reliance on natural snowfall, the family has applied for a permit to drill a well and install snow‑making equipment. “Next year, hopefully we’ll get snow‑making for the tubing hill, so we can get that started, hopefully by Thanksgiving,” Miller said. If approved, the new system would allow the hill to produce its own snow, mitigating the impact of future dry, warm winters.

Optimism despite uncertain weather

Forecasters predict another dry season with milder temperatures, but Miller remains hopeful. “We’re optimistic, and we hear that it’s going to be kind of another dry year, the weather not as cold as what we need, but we’re not going to look that way—we’re going to make the positive, we’re going along that it’s going to be a great year,” he said.

He added that after 20 years of building the hill, giving up is not an option. “There is no way I’m going to give up on it. I’ve spent 20 years building this, and it’s not always about the money,” Miller emphasized.

Local impact

Magic Mountain has long been a gathering place for families in the Magic Valley, offering affordable winter recreation and a sense of community. Its reopening is expected to boost local tourism, support seasonal jobs, and provide a safe outdoor outlet for children and adults alike.

The hill’s future now rests on both the weather and continued community backing. With the fundraiser’s success and the planned upgrades, the Miller family is poised to bring back a beloved winter tradition for Idaho families.
