LSU players support Coach Kiffin’s push to add waived NFL hopefuls

On Saturday, ESPN’s College GameDay will spotlight LSU’s season debut in Baton Rouge, but the buzz extends beyond the game itself. Coach Lane Kiffan has sparked a local conversation by pursuing former college players who spent part of the summer in NFL camps, a move that has drawn both interest and controversy.

Players back the idea

During a recent walk‑through, former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright, who spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns, joined the LSU squad. Wright must sit out the Clemson game because the NCAA requires a seven‑day acclimatization period before he can be eligible.

Coach Kiffan said he weighed the impact of adding late‑season players on the existing roster. “I probably am in the minority of how I make decisions and probably not what most coaches do,” he explained. “I feel like my decision should always be made in the best interest of the players that sit in this team room — and not for my reputation or how decisions will play in the national media.”

Legal backdrop

The SEC announced a rule last week that would bar programs from adding players who have signed contracts with professional leagues, imposing penalties on coaches, programs and schools that violate it. However, a temporary restraining order signed by a Baton Rouge judge has blocked the rule for now. The judge will issue a ruling on Thursday to decide whether the order remains in effect or the SEC rule resumes as law.

In the meantime, Kiffan said he will continue to listen to his players. “I met with our leadership committee of our players,” he said. “I told them, ‘It’s your team. What do you want to do? If these players are allowed to be added to rosters, what do you want to do?’ Every one of them was emphatic—if they can help us win, bring them.”

He added that the players understand the balance between team cohesion and the realities of the next level. “We have a team that’s practiced together all offseason, but one of them said, ‘Hey, this is how it works at the next level. This is how the real world works.’”

What’s at stake for LSU

If the SEC rule is reinstated, LSU could face sanctions for adding waived NFL hopefuls, potentially affecting coaching staff and the program’s reputation. The current legal pause gives the Tigers a window to evaluate the talent pool and decide whether the potential boost outweighs any future penalties.

Local fans and alumni are watching closely, as the decision could influence LSU’s competitiveness in the SEC and nationally. The outcome may also set a precedent for other programs navigating the intersection of college athletics and professional‑league contracts.

Looking ahead

With College GameDay in town and the season opener against Clemson looming, the LSU community will see how Coach Kiffan’s player‑first approach plays out on the field and in the courtroom. The upcoming judicial ruling will determine whether the SEC’s new rule becomes enforceable, shaping the landscape of college football roster management for the rest of the season.
