Japan’s manufacturing PMI climbs to 54.9 in August, signaling strong growth

Tokyo – Japan’s manufacturing industry continued its upward trajectory in August, according to the latest S&P Global Japan Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI). The index rose to 54.9 from 54.5 in July, marking the highest level since April and the fastest growth in new business activity since January 2018.

Robust demand for high‑tech products

Analysts attribute the surge to solid demand for semiconductors and AI‑related products. Annabel Fiddes, economics associate director at S&P Global Market Intelligence, said the sector is well positioned to sustain its strong performance, especially as AI‑related demand remains robust.

Consistent expansion and output gains

The PMI’s reading above the 50.0 threshold confirms that the sector has expanded for eight consecutive months. Output also rose for an eighth straight month, with the pace only slightly easing from July’s near 12‑year record. The growth rate was the second‑fastest since February 2014, reflecting improved market conditions, new product releases, and higher volumes of incoming work.

Export orders and staffing trends

Export orders increased at the quickest pace since the start of 2018, driven by stronger demand from North America, Southeast Asia, and China. Manufacturers continued to add staff for a 21st consecutive month, with the rate of job creation the fastest since February 2018. Backlogged work grew for an eighth straight month, with the accumulation rate the second‑quickest since February 2014.

Price pressures and cost outlook

Cost pressures eased for a second month as input‑price inflation slowed to its weakest level since March. Selling‑price inflation also softened to the lowest level since April. Nevertheless, price pressures remain historically elevated due to higher raw‑material and oil costs linked to the conflict in the Middle East, supply bottlenecks around the Strait of Hormuz, and a weak yen.

Optimism about the year ahead

Business confidence rose to a six‑month high and stayed above the long‑run trend. Companies cited stronger market conditions, new product launches, and demand for semiconductors and AI‑related technology as key drivers of the upbeat outlook.

Overall, the August PMI data suggest that Japan’s manufacturing sector is maintaining momentum, supported by global demand for high‑tech components and a resilient domestic workforce.
