Louisville’s Tom Sawyer Park Hosts BMX Derby City Nationals with Over 900 Riders

Tom Sawyer Park in Louisville became the epicenter of BMX racing this Labor Day weekend as it hosted the USA BMX Derby City Nationals. The event attracted over 900 competitors representing 40 states and 30 nations, turning the park’s 800‑acre grounds into a bustling hub of high‑speed action.

Local Youth Shines on the Track

Among the field is 14‑year‑old Warren Gordon, known on the circuit as “The Regulator.” Despite only eight years of experience, Gordon has already amassed an impressive résumé. “I won at Akron this year, and I’m the four‑time state champion in Georgia for 14‑year‑olds,” he told reporters. Gordon praised the track’s design, noting the downhill sections that let riders maintain speed without constant pedaling. “If you get a good pump, you get a lot of speed, and it’s really flowy,” he added.

World‑Class Facility Draws National Attention

The Derby City BMX track, built within Tom Sawyer Park, features an Olympic‑standard, 8‑meter supercross starting hill. Its reputation for fast, technical riding has made it a favorite among elite racers. BMX USA’s senior vice president, Justin Wahl, highlighted the significance of the Louisville stop. “Over Labor Day weekend, we are always here in Louisville. It’s always an exciting time to come out here and feel the energy of the racing happening, but the history as well,” Wahl said.

Event Schedule and Community Access

Practice sessions and preliminary heats began on Friday and continued through Saturday, culminating in championship rounds on Sunday. While the Derby City Nationals are one of 30 national‑level competitions on the BMX USA circuit, the true national championship will be held later in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Fans can enjoy the races free of charge, though parking fees apply. The open‑access policy reflects BMX USA’s commitment to making the sport visible and affordable for families and local enthusiasts.

Impact on Louisville and the Wider BMX Community

The influx of riders, coaches, and supporters provides a boost to Louisville’s hospitality sector, from hotels to local eateries. Moreover, the event showcases the city’s capacity to host large‑scale sporting gatherings, reinforcing its reputation as a vibrant, family‑friendly destination.

As the weekend draws to a close, participants and spectators alike will leave with memories of high‑octane competition, community camaraderie, and the unmistakable roar of BMX bikes echoing through Tom Sawyer Park.
