Louisville leaders have unveiled a brand new design for the city’s Belvedere, a prominent public space in the heart of downtown. The project aims to overhaul approximately one million square feet of deteriorating concrete, making it safer and more stable for the community.
Design and Features
The new design will feature a nature playground, a new water feature, and over 350 new trees. It will also include a performance stage and flexible gathering areas, making it an active public space throughout the year. The existing structure will be repaired and reinforced to support more weight, allowing heavy vehicles, including emergency vehicles, to access the area.
Mayor Craig Greenberg emphasized the importance of safety, stating, “We wanna make sure that people feel safe and are safe during the day and every night 365 days a year at the Belvedere.” The project is expected to be completed by Thunder Over Louisville in 2030, with initial construction beginning later this year.
Community Input and Funding
The development team has held eight public meetings to gather community input, and an online survey has received over 1,000 responses. The new design reflects this feedback, and the project is expected to be funded through a combination of city, state, and philanthropic funding.
