A Louisville native is celebrating an NBA title after helping guide the New York Knicks to their first championship in decades. Darren Erman, a graduate of DuPont Manual High School, serves as an assistant coach for the Knicks, who clinched the NBA Finals on Saturday night.
From Corporate Lawyer to NBA Coach
His path to the NBA wasn’t a traditional one. Before pursuing coaching full time, he worked as a corporate lawyer. He left that career in 2003 to take a job as an assistant coach at St. Anthony High School in New Jersey, and that jump ultimately helped launch his basketball coaching journey that now spans more than two decades.
In November 2020, he took on his current position as an assistant coach with the Knicks, and now, he’s helped deliver New York its first NBA title since 1973. On the player side, the roster also carried a Kentucky connection with Karl Anthony Towns, who played under John Calipari for the University of Kentucky during the 2014-2015 season.
On Saturday night, the Knicks managed to hold off the San Antonio Spurs to win Game 5 with a final score of 94-90.
