Baton Rouge, La. — The Louisiana Wildlife Federation and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries have launched the 2026 Youth Hunter of the Year Award contest, inviting young outdoor enthusiasts across the state to submit their hunting stories.
How to enter
Applicants must be Louisiana residents who were fifteen years old or younger at the time of their hunt, which must have taken place between January 1 and December 31, 2026. Each entry requires a completed application form, a short narrative describing the hunt, and photographs taken during the outing. Harvests are not required, and past winners are ineligible.
Prizes and recognition
The judging panel will select one boy and one girl who best capture the joy, excitement, and camaraderie of hunting. Winners will receive a commemorative plaque and a gift‑card, and they will be formally recognized at the Federation’s 61st annual Conservation Achievement Awards banquet scheduled for April 2027. In addition, every applicant will be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift‑card, with submissions due by January 31, 2027.
Why the contest matters
Both agencies emphasize that the contest celebrates responsible outdoor stewardship and encourages the next generation to appreciate Louisiana’s abundant wildlife resources. By highlighting personal stories, the program seeks to strengthen family traditions of hunting, promote safe practices, and reinforce the cultural heritage that ties many Louisiana families to the land.
Support from the community
Local hunting clubs, outdoor retailers, and conservation groups have pledged to help publicize the contest and provide mentorship to participants. The agencies hope the initiative will inspire more families to explore hunting as a wholesome, character‑building activity that aligns with traditional values and respect for God‑given creation.
