Louisiana opioid deaths drop 59% as state celebrates behavioral‑health gains

The Louisiana Department of Health (LDH) announced a dramatic 59% reduction in opioid‑related deaths between 2022 and 2025, a decline that surpasses the national average of 46.2%. The improvement reflects the state’s focused efforts on behavioral‑health services, emergency‑department protocols, and tighter prescribing practices.

Key statistics show real progress

During the same period, opioid‑related emergency‑department visits fell 52%, and the rate of opioid prescriptions per 100 residents dropped 10%. While the 2025 figures are still preliminary, LDH Secretary Bruce Greenstein praised the trend, stating, “We’re seeing proven progress in behavioral health in Louisiana, and that is something worth celebrating.”

Survey data still shows challenges

Federal data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) continues to rank Louisiana near the bottom of the nation for opioid misuse, placing the state 51st for past‑year misuse and 49th for opioid‑use disorder. The survey, which sampled 1,920 Louisiana residents ages 12 and older in 2023‑2024, estimates that 4.58% of residents (about 174,000 people) misused opioids in the past year, with a slightly higher rate of 4.99% among adults 26 and older.

It is important to note that the NSDUH definition of opioid misuse includes heroin and prescription‑opioid misuse but does not count illegally manufactured fentanyl, a factor that may understate the true scope of the problem.

Treatment access improves, but gaps remain

Louisiana performed strongly in the federal survey on receipt of substance‑use treatment, ranking fifth nationally for the percentage of people who received treatment in the past year. Nevertheless, the data reveal a sizable treatment gap: SAMHSA estimates that roughly 727,000 residents needed substance‑use treatment in 2024, yet about 574,000 of those individuals did not receive it. Approximately 179,000 Louisianans did receive treatment, which can include inpatient or outpatient care, medication‑assisted treatment, telehealth services, or treatment provided in correctional facilities.

Broader behavioral‑health picture

Across all behavioral‑health measures reviewed by LDH, Louisiana averaged a 28th‑place ranking among the 50 states and Washington, D.C., and placed in the top 20 on 13 individual metrics. Notably, the state ranked second for perceived high risk of monthly cocaine use and trying heroin once or twice, and fifth for receipt of substance‑use treatment.

In related mental‑health rankings, Mental Health America’s 2025 State of Mental Health in America report placed Louisiana 27th overall, while its 2023 report listed the state at 36th. These rankings rely on federal data collected through 2023, so they reflect an earlier period than the most recent opioid trends.

What the data mean for Louisiana families

The decline in deaths and emergency visits signals that the state’s investments in treatment and prevention are bearing fruit, offering hope to families affected by opioid addiction. Continued support for treatment programs, especially in underserved areas, will be essential to close the remaining gap between those who need help and those who receive it.

State officials encourage residents to seek help early and to use the expanding telehealth options that make treatment more accessible, particularly for rural families. By maintaining a focus on compassionate, faith‑centered care and respecting the constitutional right of individuals to seek medical assistance, Louisiana aims to keep the momentum moving forward.
