Fifteen Acres of Living History: An Afternoon at the Water Resources Education Center’s Big Brother, Vancouver’s Own Ridgefield Station

There is a moment, about a quarter-mile into the Carty Unit Auto Tour at Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge, when you cut the engine, roll down the window, and realize the loudest sound around you is the wingbeat of a great blue heron lifting off a marsh about forty feet away. That moment alone is worth the twenty-minute drive north from downtown Vancouver.

Ridgefield sits in the small city of the same name, just off Interstate 5 at Exit 14. The refuge itself stretches across more than 5,200 acres of wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands along the Columbia River floodplain, and it is genuinely one of the most ecologically productive places in the Pacific Northwest. The Carty Unit — the section most visitors explore first — offers a roughly four-mile, one-way auto tour loop that you drive at your own pace, windows open, binoculars at hand, phone camera finally earning its keep.

What makes this place feel different from a simple nature walk is the sheer density of wildlife encounters. Tundra swans pour through in the winter months by the tens of thousands, turning the flooded fields a shimmering white. Sandhill cranes make a seasonal appearance that stops traffic — not metaphorically, literally. In the summer, the grasslands go quiet and golden, and you start noticing the smaller stories: a coyote trotting a distant levee, a northern harrier quartering low over the reeds, a painted turtle sunning itself on a log with the patience of a monk.

The refuge is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and the team does excellent interpretive work. Pull-outs along the auto tour are marked and labeled, so even if you do not consider yourself a birder, you leave knowing what you saw and why it matters. There is also a short walking loop at the Carty Unit trailhead that takes you through a patch of old-growth Oregon white oak — a habitat type that has nearly vanished from the Pacific Northwest and feels almost sacred to walk through.

Admission is free with your America the Beautiful pass or a modest day-use fee — currently four dollars per vehicle — which makes this one of the genuinely best-value afternoons in Clark County. The auto tour is open year-round during daylight hours, though spring and fall migrations are the showpiece seasons. Bring a field guide, or download the free Merlin Bird ID app before you arrive. You will use it more than you expect.

The nearest coffee before you go is on Pioneer Street in Ridgefield proper, or you can fuel up in Vancouver and head straight out. Either way, give yourself at least two hours. The wildlife does not run on a schedule, and that is entirely the point.
