Louisiana students will soon have access to federal grants to attend short-term workforce training programs. The Workforce Pell program, an expansion of the federal Pell Grant program, will provide grants averaging $2,200 to help students get credentialed in high-demand jobs.
Program Details
The program includes qualifying courses in carpentry, construction, plumbing, and heating and air conditioning service, among others. To remain eligible, schools must meet strict reporting requirements, including a 70% credential completion rate and proof of job placement for recipients.
Richard Nelson, the state’s community college system president, noted that these requirements might impact which programs remain eligible beyond the first year. Nelson also emphasized that the Workforce Pell Grant can be stacked with state financial aid, such as the MJ Foster Promise and TOPS Tech programs.
State Support
Workforce training has been a key priority for Gov. Jeff Landry, who has increased funding for these programs since taking office in 2024. The legislature has also increased financial aid available to students for workforce training, with an additional $23 million allocated to the Louisiana Community and Technical College System this year.
