Louisiana colleges are set to receive an infusion of tax money for their sports programs. Each of the state’s Division I schools with football programs will get approximately $2 million annually from the Supporting Programs, Opportunities, Resources and Teams (SPORT) Fund, created during the 2025 legislative session.
How the Money Will Be Used
The money comes from sports gambling tax revenue and is intended to benefit student-athletes. The law requires that the funds be used for things like scholarships, but it does not require the schools to disclose exactly how the money is spent. Southern and UL Monroe plan to use the funds for new scholarships, while LSU will use the money for new scholarships and to help mitigate rising tuition costs.
Other schools, such as the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, Nicholls, and Southeastern, plan to use the funds to stabilize their budgets. Louisiana Tech Athletics Director Ryan Ivey said the school will use its share of the money to help meet obligations under a settlement requiring college sports programs to share revenue with athletes.
