Los Lunas restricts fireworks

The Village of Los Lunas has enacted fireworks restrictions due to drought and elevated fire risk. Residents planning Independence Day celebrations in Los Lunas will face new restrictions on fireworks after village officials declared a drought emergency in response to ongoing dry conditions and heightened wildfire concerns.

Fireworks Restrictions

The Village Council adopted Resolution 26-10 on June 11, establishing temporary limits on the sale and use of certain fireworks throughout the community. Banned items include missile-type rockets, helicopters, aerial spinners, stick-type rockets, and ground audible devices.

Village officials said other fireworks not included on the prohibited list may still be used, but only under specific conditions. Residents must use approved fireworks on paved surfaces, bare dirt areas, or locations where a readily available water source is nearby. Officials are also encouraging users to keep a hose, bucket of water, or other firefighting equipment on hand while igniting fireworks.

In addition, all fireworks are prohibited in wildland areas within the village, where dry vegetation and high temperatures can significantly increase the likelihood of fire ignition and spread.

The restrictions will remain in place through July 11. Village leaders noted that the emergency order could be extended if drought conditions persist.

As the Fourth of July holiday approaches, officials are urging residents to consider attending professionally managed public fireworks displays instead of setting off fireworks at home.
