Long‑time Minnesota State Fair Vendor ‘The Big Pepper’ Shuts Down After 46 Years

For nearly half a century, the bright green structure known as “The Big Pepper” has been a staple of the Minnesota State Fair. Located outside the Horse Barn, the booth was founded in 1979 by Margaret and Joe Barrett, who turned a simple idea into a beloved family business that drew generations of fairgoers.

Family roots run deep

Margaret Barrett grew up at the fair, recalling that her father worked a variety of jobs on the grounds. When she and her husband opened The Big Pepper, the couple created a venue where their children could help out as soon as they were old enough. Over the years, grandchildren joined the effort, turning the booth into a multigenerational enterprise.

After Joe’s death in 2018, Margaret, now 78, continued to manage the concession with the help of her children and grandchildren. She had planned to pass the operation to the next generation, keeping the family tradition alive.

Fair officials decide not to renew the license

In late 2025, Margaret informed the Minnesota State Fair that she would not return as the principal licensee for the 2026 season. The fair’s vendor‑review process then examined several factors, including the geographic mix of vendors, the quality and variety of offerings, the appearance and upkeep of the stand, and projected financial potential.

According to a statement from fair officials, the review concluded that The Big Pepper did not meet the criteria for renewal, and the booth was not invited back for the 2026 fair. The decision came as a surprise to the Barrett family, who had fulfilled all procedural requirements.

Final goodbye

On an April morning, the Barrett family gathered at the fairgrounds to photograph the iconic pepper before it was dismantled. The removal marked the end of a 46‑year chapter in Minnesota’s fair history, and many longtime attendees expressed disappointment on social media.

While the loss of The Big Pepper is felt by the community, the fair continues to introduce new vendors and food options each year, reflecting the evolving tastes of fairgoers while honoring the legacy of long‑standing traditions.

What’s next for the Barretts?

Margaret and her family have not announced any plans to relocate the business or open a new venue elsewhere. For now, they are focusing on preserving the memories of their decades of service and looking forward to future opportunities that align with their family values.
