Residents and commuters in Covington, Kentucky, should prepare for significant changes to their travel routes as long-term closures of several I-71/75 ramps are set to begin. These closures are part of the ongoing Brent Spence Bridge Corridor Project, a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving traffic flow and safety in the region.
Details of the Closures
Starting Monday, the on-ramp to I-71/75 southbound from Bullock Avenue will be closed. Additionally, Bullock Avenue itself will be closed between Pike Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, with no access to W. 12th St. These closures are expected to last until late October 2026.
Another significant closure involves the I-71/75 northbound Exit 191 ramp to 12th Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, which will remain closed until next summer. Furthermore, the I-71/75 southbound off-ramp, which splits to either W. 5th or Crescent Avenue, will also be closed. Notably, the W. 5th portion of this ramp is set to close permanently.
Impact on Local Traffic
These closures are part of the preparations for the construction of a new bridge, with the first construction barge having arrived from St. Louis earlier this week. The barge is now stationed across from Paycor Stadium, where commuters crossing the existing bridge will be able to witness the progress of the construction daily.
Renderings of the new bridge were shared last June, and officials are optimistic about opening the new bridge to drivers by 2031. The project aims to address long-standing traffic congestion issues and enhance the overall infrastructure of the region.
