Long Island celebrates hometown hero Brandon Bussi as Suffolk declares “Brandon Bussi Day”

Long Island residents turned out in force on Wednesday to welcome Carolina Hurricanes goaltender Brandon Bussi, the first native of Suffolk County to hoist the Stanley Cup. The celebration centered at The Rinx ice rink in Hauppauge, the very place where Bussi first laced up his skates at age six.

Home‑ice tribute

Tom Palamara, president and owner of The Rinx, recalled Bussi’s request to walk on the ice with the trophy at the spot where his hockey journey began. “If it’s all right, I’d like to walk on the ice with the cup where I first stepped on as a child,” Bussi asked. Palamara granted the wish, saying, “Brandon, absolutely! Not only do I have goose bumps but whatever you want, this is your day.”

When Bussi entered the rink carrying the Stanley Cup, youth players tapped their sticks in salute and fans cheered as he lifted the trophy overhead. “This moment is pretty surreal—to be back where I first strapped on my pads with loved ones, seeing old faces and coaches,” Bussi said.

Community excitement

Fans lined up hours before the event, many traveling from surrounding towns to catch a glimpse of the champion. One attendee exclaimed, “I have never seen this before and I didn’t think anyone from our town could make it to the big leagues one day!” Another added, “We are huge hockey fans and Bussi went to our district; he graduated from my high school.” A third fan said, “I look forward to meeting a guy who won the Stanley Cup from our town and plays on the same teams I play on—it’s a really cool thing.”

To ensure as many residents as possible could share the experience, Bussi brought the Cup outside the rink for additional photo opportunities. “I wanted to see a cup for the first time ever,” one fan said, while another noted, “That moment was special. This day is amazing.”

Official recognition

Suffolk County officials took the occasion a step further by officially declaring August 19 “Brandon Bussi Day.” The proclamation underscores the pride the community feels for a local athlete who has achieved the sport’s highest honor.

Beyond the celebration, Bussi’s story highlights the importance of local youth programs and family support in nurturing talent. His parents, coaches, and mentors have spoken about the role of faith, hard work, and community values in his ascent to the NHL.

As the Stanley Cup made its way back to Long Island, the event served as a reminder that hometown heroes can emerge from modest beginnings, inspiring the next generation of athletes to pursue their dreams on and off the ice.
