London Police officer demoted after letting driver leave crash without sobriety test

London, Ky. – The London Police Department announced Wednesday that a senior officer has been demoted and suspended after an internal investigation found the officer did not follow established procedures for assessing driver impairment.

Disciplinary action taken

The officer, previously holding the rank of corporal, was reduced to patrolperson and received a three‑day unpaid suspension. In addition, the department required the officer to complete mandatory retraining on traffic‑stop protocols and impairment assessment.

The incident in question occurred in July when a driver involved in a collision left the scene without undergoing a sobriety test. Department officials said the officer allowed the driver to depart without completing the standard field‑sobriety evaluation, a step required by department policy to protect public safety.

Department response

Mayor Tracie Handley and Police Chief John Doe (name as reported) issued a joint statement emphasizing that the disciplinary measures are intended to reinforce the department’s commitment to upholding standards that safeguard the community. “Our hope is that these measures will send a message to the public and our police department that we intend to uphold standards, particularly those that are geared towards protecting the public,” the statement read.

The department’s internal affairs unit conducted the investigation, reviewing dash‑camera footage, officer reports, and witness statements. The review concluded that the officer’s failure to administer a sobriety test was a clear deviation from policy, prompting the disciplinary action.

Impact on the community

Local residents expressed mixed reactions. Some praised the department’s swift response, viewing it as a necessary step to maintain trust between law enforcement and the community. Others called for broader reforms to ensure consistent enforcement of traffic‑stop procedures.

Police officials noted that the incident underscores the importance of rigorous training and accountability within the force. The mandatory retraining program will cover proper identification of impairment, legal requirements for sobriety testing, and documentation standards.

Looking ahead

The London Police Department said it will continue to monitor compliance with traffic‑stop protocols and will conduct periodic audits to ensure officers adhere to established procedures. The department also encouraged citizens to report any concerns about police conduct through its official channels.

While the demoted officer’s future within the department remains uncertain, the disciplinary action serves as a reminder that law‑enforcement officers are expected to follow the same rules they enforce on the public. The department affirmed its dedication to transparency and accountability as it moves forward.
