Local produce may lower foodborne illness risk, experts say

North Carolina residents looking to protect their families from foodborne illness are being urged to shop at farmers’ markets and other local sources. Ellen Shumaker, outreach director for Safe Plates – a food‑safety program run by the NC State Extension – explained that recent FDA alerts involving jalapeños, Brussels sprouts and blueberries have heightened public awareness of contamination risks.

Outbreak data shows a modest rise

The FDA reports 19 outbreak investigations for 2026 so far, up from 16 in 2025. While the increase is slight, the visibility of each incident – from salmonella findings to a Cyclospora parasite discovered in leafy greens and onions – has made consumers more vigilant.

Why local produce can be safer

Chip Simmons, a food‑safety expert at NC State University, said that produce grown close to home generally faces fewer opportunities for contamination. “Cyclospora is endemic in the tropics,” Simmons noted, adding that locally grown vegetables are unlikely to carry the parasite. He also highlighted the added benefit of supporting the local economy when shoppers choose regional farms.

Practical steps for families

Experts stress that most produce remains safe when handled properly. Washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, especially those with textured skins, reduces the chance of ingesting harmful microbes. Shumaker pointed out that heightened testing during the Cyclospora outbreak led to more reported cases, not necessarily more actual infections.

For families concerned about nutrition and safety, the recommendation is simple: buy from trusted local growers, wash produce well, and stay informed about FDA alerts. By doing so, consumers can enjoy fresh, nutritious foods while minimizing the risk of foodborne illness.
