Local Food Pantries Expand Summer Outreach

As the school year comes to a close, many families in the Wylie area are facing a strain on their household budgets due to the loss of school-provided breakfasts and lunches. To help fill the gap, several local organizations are expanding their outreach efforts to provide food and other essential items to those in need.

Summer Lunch Programs

Hope for the Cities, a local nonprofit, is partnering with 5 Loaves Ministries, Wylie Community Christian Care Center, Smith Public Library, and Tango Charities to provide weekly summer lunches for families in Wylie ISD and Community ISD. The program, which begins on June 15, will provide enough meals to feed approximately 500 people each week.

In addition to the summer lunch program, Hope for the Cities will also continue its regular doorstep food box deliveries. The organization is seeking donations of individual cereal cups, 8-ounce shelf-stable milk cartons, macaroni and cheese cups, breakfast bars, and Pop-Tarts.

Food Drives and Donations

5 Loaves Ministries is hosting a cereal drive, called the Stars, Stripes & Cereal Drive, which runs through July 6. Unopened cereal donations can be dropped off at 4401 Williford Road or purchased through the organization’s Amazon wish list. Wylie Community Christian Care Center is also collecting hygiene products, including shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, diapers, and baby wipes.

Amazing Grace Food Pantry, which delivered 7,760 weekend food bags to Wylie schools through its Food 4 Kids program during the past school year, is continuing its work through the summer. The pantry is providing approximately 500 food bags each week to families who visit the pantry and is seeking donations of individual cereal cups, 8-ounce shelf-stable milk cartons, macaroni and cheese cups, breakfast bars, and Pop-Tarts.
