Livable Neighborhoods Task Force Engages Wyandotte County Community

The Livable Neighborhoods Task Force of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kansas, recently held a meeting to engage with local nonprofits, school districts, and first-responder agencies. The gathering aimed to exchange information and discuss community issues such as junk cars, legal assistance, and upcoming events like Juneteenth celebrations and the World Cup.

Community Development Block Grant Input

The task force is actively seeking public input on the priorities for the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, totaling approximately $2.14 million. Residents are encouraged to participate in a survey available online and attend a public hearing on June 5 at the Municipal Building to voice their opinions.

Support for Local Families

Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools is offering free meals for children and teens at various community centers, with no registration required. The Turner School District, in partnership with Hy-Vee, has launched a school pantry and a food bus to provide meals to young residents.

Upcoming Community Events

Several community events are on the horizon, including the eighth annual Expungement Fair by the Wyandotte County District Attorney’s Office, and the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department’s football camp and Summer Youth Academy. The fire department has announced a no-burn requirement until October and will host a blood drive in July.

Neighborhood Initiatives

The Neighborhood Resource Center is conducting an auto “blitz” to enforce property maintenance codes, focusing on junk vehicles. Plans for zoning code updates are underway, although staffing challenges have slowed progress.

Engagement and Celebrations

Mayor Christal Watson is hosting a series of town hall meetings to discuss community needs, and the UG is organizing a Juneteenth celebration featuring a parade and evening festivities. Additionally, the UG is preparing for FIFA events with various activities under the ‘Kick It In KC’ series.
