Lindy’s Diner owners shocked by abrupt city shutdown, seek quick reopening

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The owners of Lindy’s Diner say their lives were upended when the city red‑tagged the nearly 120‑year‑old building and ordered the popular downtown eatery to close immediately. City code enforcement flagged a bow in the structure after a recent inspection, prompting officials to declare the site unsafe.

Steve and Dawn Vatoseow say the notice came as a surprise. The city reports only two recent inspections at the property, while the couple recalls multiple visits by inspectors in the weeks leading up to the closure and no indication the building posed an immediate danger until the red‑tag was placed.

Lindy’s has been part of Albuquerque’s downtown for decades. It began as the Coney Island Café in 1929; Steve’s father worked there as a cook and later purchased the building in the 1960s, renaming it Lindy’s. Steve eventually took over the business, and Dawn says the restaurant became the center of their family life — a place where regulars watched their children grow up.

The Vatoseows acknowledge the structure is old and has known issues, but they point to earlier evaluations by structural engineers that did not find the building at risk of imminent collapse. The couple says they have invested significantly in repairs over the years, including roughly $150,000 to install internal steel supports, and that they pursued city rehabilitation grants for further work but were turned down.

Beyond the loss of daily income, the owners say the city is requiring them to cover the cost of a protective fence, the fence permit and parking meters that have been blocked off. They are now preparing structural engineering reports and applying for the permits the city has requested, aiming to meet a May 4 deadline listed in the enforcement notice.

Despite the disruption, the Vatoseows remain focused on reopening and serving their longtime customers. “We’ve been here a long time,” Steve said, reflecting on the family legacy. “Thank you, Albuquerque.” Dawn added, “It’s been a hell of a ride. We love this community and want to be back serving it.”
