Lincoln County commissioners are considering a proposal to lower the agricultural land threshold from 40 acres to 20 acres, which could cut taxes for smaller farms but shift more of the bill to other property owners.
A preliminary county analysis was presented to the commissioners, who spent 45 minutes discussing the trade-off. They took no action on a resolution to restate the existing 40-acre standard and instead asked staff for more research.
According to Karla Goossen, the county’s director of equalization, agricultural property made up about 13 percent of Lincoln County’s taxable value in 2017, 9 percent in 2022, and 7 percent in 2026. There are approximately 4,100 parcels classified as agricultural, compared to nearly 29,000 nonagricultural parcels.
