Lincoln City Council term‑limit amendment petition certified

Lincoln, Neb. – The petition to place a term‑limit amendment on the city charter has cleared the first hurdle. Lancaster County Election Commissioner Todd Wiltgen announced that the petition submitted by the Good Government Lincoln group satisfied the required number of valid signatures.

Petition numbers

The election commission reviewed a total of 602 petition pages, comprising 8,082 individual signature lines. After a thorough verification process, 5,628 signatures were deemed valid, representing a 69.6% validity rate. The commission certified that the petition met the statutory threshold and returned all pages to the Lincoln City Clerk for further processing.

What the amendment proposes

The proposed charter amendment would limit city‑council members to two consecutive four‑year terms. If approved by voters in the November election, council members would be restricted to a maximum of eight years of continuous service before a mandatory break.

Community response

Good Government Lincoln released a statement celebrating the certification. Petition sponsor Tony Fulton said, “We are pleased the first of the proposed charter amendments has been certified. Voters are excited for a say on these initiatives in November. Thank you to the Lancaster County Election Commissioner for the quick work in verifying the signatures.”

Next steps

With the petition certified, the amendment will be placed on the November ballot alongside any other charter proposals that meet filing deadlines. Voters will have the opportunity to decide whether to impose term limits on their elected council members. The city clerk’s office will provide sample ballots and informational materials in the weeks leading up to the election.

Background

Term‑limit proposals have surfaced in several municipalities across the United States as a way to promote fresh perspectives in local government and reduce the potential for entrenched incumbency. Supporters argue that regular turnover can encourage new ideas and greater accountability, while opponents caution that experience and institutional knowledge may be lost.

The Lincoln charter amendment process requires a petition signed by at least 10% of registered voters, with a minimum of 5% from each of the city’s three wards. Good Government Lincoln’s effort appears to have met both thresholds, allowing the measure to advance to the ballot.

Residents who wish to learn more about the amendment, its implications, or the upcoming election can contact the Lincoln City Clerk’s office or visit the official city website for voter guides and FAQs.
