Liechtenstein’s royal house announced a change in the country’s rules of succession, allowing a woman to inherit the throne in the future.
Hereditary Prince Alois made the announcement in a speech marking the country’s national day, stating that the change was approved by a two-thirds majority of family members who can vote on such matters.
Change in Succession Rules
The line of succession will be adjusted from male primogeniture to absolute primogeniture, meaning the first-born child, regardless of sex, will become the heir to the throne and later the princess or prince of Liechtenstein.
The change is not expected to affect the top of the line of succession in the immediate future, with Prince Hans-Adam II remaining the head of state and Prince Alois, his eldest son, holding most of the powers.
