In the heart of Liberty Hill, Texas, the Liberty Hill School of Music is making waves by nurturing young musical talent across Williamson County. Owned and operated by Gomez, the school employs a dozen instructors who teach around 200 students various instruments, including piano, voice, guitar, and flute.
Meet the Owner
Gomez, who began her teaching journey from her home in Round Rock, has a rich background in music and education. She received a piano scholarship to Sam Houston State University and later earned an education degree. Her passion for teaching was evident early on, as she once taught 50 students a week while raising her own children. After moving to Liberty Hill, word of mouth quickly spread, and she resumed teaching 50 students weekly.
What They Offer
The school, now celebrating its third anniversary in downtown Liberty Hill, initially offered piano and voice lessons. It has since expanded to include a variety of instruments, attracting skilled teachers. Gomez emphasizes the importance of starting musical education early, recommending piano and voice lessons as young as six years old, and guitar lessons for children aged six or seven due to the hand dexterity required. The school also prepares students for band auditions, particularly in percussion, flute, and brass instruments.
Gomez’s approach is informed by her background in early childhood and special education, ensuring that each child’s unique needs are met. The school evaluates young children’s readiness for lessons, focusing on their fine motor skills and overall readiness.
The Setup
The school features five practice rooms equipped with soundboards and recently acquired two new Roland pianos, offering parents flexibility through a rent-to-own program. Guitar rentals are available for a nominal fee, and plans are underway to expand into instrument and accessory sales, providing local families with convenient options.
Community Engagement
Beyond music lessons, the school collaborates with Lone Star Dance Co., which began as a small program at the school and has since grown into an independent dance company. The school hosts recitals in local venues, including the backyard of Agape BBQ, fostering a family-friendly atmosphere and inviting participation from other local businesses.
Gomez’s dedication to her students’ growth is evident in the annual showcase recitals for advanced students and the trophies awarded to commemorate their achievements. Her ultimate goal is to mentor future piano teachers, sharing effective teaching methods and creating a supportive environment for educators.
