LeBron James, one of the most decorated athletes in history, has chosen to join the Philadelphia 76ers on a two-year, $8 million contract with a player option in Year 2.
James’ Decision
James released a statement on X, explaining his decision to join the 76ers. He stated that he still loves the game and wants to compete and win another championship. James believes he can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team and is excited to start this new journey.
Multiple Sixers already have relationships with James. Sixers star guard Tyrese Maxey knows him well from their summer workouts. Seven-time big man All-Star Joel Embiid teamed up with James during the United States’ run to a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics. James and new Sixers president of basketball operations Mike Gansey go way back.
The move comes after the Sixers shocked the NBA by trading for Jaylen Brown and sending Paul George, two-first round draft picks and two second-rounders to the Celtics. With James on the roster, the Sixers’ full-strength starting lineup projects to be Maxey, VJ Edgecombe, Brown, James, and Embiid.
