LDS Church delivers 35,000 pounds of food to Eugene food bank

Early on August 20, a tractor‑trailer loaded with more than 35,000 pounds of canned goods, pasta, and household items pulled into the Food for Lane County warehouse in Eugene. The shipment came from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter‑day Saints’ central storehouse in Salt Lake City and was described by local volunteers as an unexpected blessing.

Local impact of the donation

Food for Lane County’s events and media relations coordinator, Dawn Marie Woodward, said the nonperishable load is especially valuable during the summer months when many donations consist of fresh produce that spoils quickly. “It’s a whole semi‑trailer load of shelf‑stable supplies,” Woodward explained, noting that the church’s consistent giving has helped the agency meet the needs of families facing food insecurity.

Lane County’s emergency‑preparedness firm Deployed Logix also contributed more than 23,000 pounds of food the same week, but the LDS shipment stood out because it arrived as a single, fully‑loaded truck rather than a series of smaller deliveries.

Church’s self‑reliance doctrine drives giving

The LDS Church encourages members to maintain three months of food reserves for emergencies. Excess supplies are stored in regional warehouses, then distributed to partner organizations. Rachel Andersen, communications manager for the Eugene stake, said the church’s practice of self‑reliance underpins the regular flow of food to agencies like Food for Lane County.

Bob and Michele Sundstrom, members of the Eugene Area Coordinating Council of local stakes, were present when the truck was unloaded. Michele Sundstrom highlighted the church’s broader commitment, saying, “We have an obligation, as well as a desire, to serve those around us so they can thrive and prosper.”

Community response

Local volunteers and church members praised the timing of the donation. David Willis, communications director for the Springfield stake, called the arrival “a miracle” because it came without prior notice. The surprise shipment follows an earlier 2024 effort in which the church donated 250 truckloads of food to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary.

Food for Lane County plans to distribute the nonperishables to families throughout the county, helping to fill pantry shelves and support households that rely on emergency food assistance.

Looking ahead

Both the food bank and the LDS community view the partnership as a model of faith‑based service that strengthens local families. As the region prepares for the upcoming harvest season, additional contributions from farms and businesses are expected, but the recent truckload remains a notable example of how organized charitable giving can make a tangible difference in everyday life.
