Lawrence University hires former Jeopardy! champion Ben Chan as associate professor

Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin, confirmed that Ben Chan, a well‑known former philosophy professor and nine‑time Jeopardy! champion, has been appointed as an associate professor. The university said Chan will teach and conduct research in several areas of applied philosophy, including biomedical ethics, the ethics of technology, food ethics, and the broader question of “the good life.”

Local roots and academic background

Chan previously served as a philosophy professor at St. Norbert College, also located in the Appleton area. When St. Norbert eliminated its philosophy program as part of broader budget cuts, Chan’s position there ended. He had taught at Lawrence University before, first from 2011 to 2013 and later as a visiting professor during the most recent academic year.

From game show fame to the classroom

Beyond his academic credentials, Chan gained national recognition as a nine‑time champion on the quiz show Jeopardy!. He was the runner‑up in the 2024 Tournament of Champions and participated in the Jeopardy! Invitational Tournament last year. His success on the show highlighted his breadth of knowledge, a trait he now brings to his new teaching role.

Focus on applied ethics

Lawrence University’s announcement emphasized Chan’s expertise in applied ethics, a field that examines moral questions arising from real‑world practices and technologies. In his new position, Chan will develop courses that explore how ethical principles apply to medical decision‑making, emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, food production and consumption, and philosophical concepts of a well‑lived life.

Impact on students and the community

University officials expect Chan’s interdisciplinary approach to enrich the liberal‑arts curriculum and provide students with practical tools for navigating complex moral dilemmas. “Ben’s combination of scholarly rigor and public‑facing experience makes him a valuable addition to our faculty,” said a Lawrence spokesperson. “His courses will help students think critically about the ethical dimensions of the world around them.”

Looking ahead

Chan’s appointment reflects Lawrence University’s commitment to strengthening its philosophy department after recent staffing changes. The university anticipates that his presence will attract students interested in ethics, public policy, and interdisciplinary studies, further enhancing the institution’s reputation as a hub for thoughtful, values‑centered education in the Fox Valley region.
