Wildflowers, Waterfalls, and a Trail That Earns Every Step: Hiking the Mallette Canyon Trail

There is a moment about a mile into the Mallette Canyon Trail when the ponderosa pines close in overhead, the sound of the creek rises up from below, and the rest of the world simply disappears. No lift lines, no menus to deliberate over, no cell signal pulling at your attention. Just you, the canyon, and the particular kind of quiet that the Sangre de Cristo Mountains do better than almost anywhere I have ever been.

The trailhead sits just outside the heart of Red River, making it remarkably easy to access whether you are staying in a condo downtown or camping nearby. You do not need a shuttle, a guide, or a particularly early alarm clock. Lace up your boots, fill a water bottle, and walk out the door. That kind of accessibility is rarer than it sounds in the high country of northern New Mexico.

The trail itself follows Mallette Creek through a narrow canyon carved over millennia into the volcanic rock of the Taos County wilderness. The path is moderate in difficulty, gaining elevation steadily but never brutally, which makes it suitable for fit teenagers and adults who are reasonably active. I would say you need sturdy footwear and some respect for the altitude — Red River sits at roughly 8,750 feet, and the trail climbs from there — but the rewards come early and keep coming.

In late spring and early summer, the canyon walls are draped in wildflowers: Indian paintbrush, blue columbine, and patches of yellow that catch the afternoon light in ways that make you stop and simply stare. By midsummer, the creek runs strong and clear, and there are several points where small cascades pour over mossy boulders with enough force to cool the air around them on even the warmest July afternoon. In early fall, the aspens along the upper reaches turn a shade of gold that genuinely looks like something out of a painting you would dismiss as too dramatic to be realistic.

Wildlife sightings are common. I have spotted mule deer picking their way through the willows near the creek, a pair of red-tailed hawks riding thermals above the canyon rim, and once, memorably, a black bear ambling across the trail about fifty yards ahead before disappearing into the brush without a backward glance. Carry bear spray as a sensible precaution and make a little noise as you walk.

The round-trip distance is roughly four to five miles depending on how far you choose to push, and the turnaround point offers views back down the canyon toward Red River that justify every bit of the climb. Bring a lunch. Sit on a rock above the creek. Let the mountains do what they are very, very good at doing.

Mallette Canyon Trail is the kind of place that reminds you why you came to the mountains in the first place — and why you will already be planning your return before you reach the trailhead on the way back down.
