Late‑summer wildflowers and wildlife brighten Uniontown as school year approaches

Uniontown residents are winding down summer vacations and turning their attention to the upcoming school year. Many districts have already posted fall schedules, and families are buying school supplies and swapping summer wardrobes for cooler clothing.

Nature’s late‑summer display

The heat of July is fading, and the surrounding woods are changing color. While the bright green of midsummer gives way to more subdued tones, the region’s wildflowers are putting on a final show. Along the Uniontown bypass, Pennsylvania Department of Transportation has left the roadside vegetation untouched, allowing a carpet of Touch‑Me‑Not blossoms and the delicate white heads of Queen Anne’s lace to flourish.

Goldenrod is now beginning to bloom across open fields. Though often labeled a weed, the plant’s bright yellow spikes add a splash of color and have a modest history as an herbal tea, though scientific studies on its benefits remain limited.

Local farms and fresh produce

Farmers in the area report a promising harvest this year. Fresh tomatoes, corn, and other vegetables are appearing at local markets, giving residents a wholesome alternative to store‑bought items that travel thousands of miles. A simple tomato salad or a handful of sweet corn can ease the anxiety some feel about distant, processed foods.

Sounds of late summer

Evening brings the chorus of crickets, while daylight is filled with the noisy songs of cicadas. More than 3,000 cicada species exist, including the well‑known 13‑ and 17‑year varieties that spend years underground before emerging. The nightly cricket chirps have even been used by researchers to estimate temperature: count the chirps in 15 seconds and add 37 to approximate the air temperature in Fahrenheit.

Monarchs on the move

Butterflies are beginning their southward migration, traveling from Southwestern Pennsylvania to Mexico. Monarch numbers have declined sharply in recent decades. In 2020, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service considered granting them endangered status, but other priorities delayed action. Federal, state, tribal, and nonprofit groups are now encouraging the public to plant pollinator gardens to restore habitat.

Creating a small garden on a yard or hillside can provide a safe stop for monarchs and other pollinators, while also reducing mowing time and costs for homeowners.

Community involvement

Local volunteers are invited to join ongoing efforts to plant native wildflowers and pollinator‑friendly plants. By supporting these projects, Uniontown residents help preserve the region’s natural beauty and protect vital species for future generations.
