Los Angeles Angels place Nolan Schanuel and Wade Meckler on injured lists

In a roster update that will affect the Los Angeles Angels’ lineup for the coming weeks, the club placed two key players on injured lists on Saturday. First baseman Nolan Schanuel was moved to the 10‑day injured list retroactive to Friday because of a right intercostal muscle strain. Outfielder Wade Meckler was placed on the seven‑day concussion list, also retroactive to Friday, after a hard‑hit pitch in the team’s Thursday night game in Houston.

Injury details and manager comments

Manager Kurt Suzuki explained Schanuel’s situation, noting that the player had been dealing with the issue for a short time and that the decision was made as a precaution. “I think it was something that he’s kind of been dealing with a little bit, and it just got to a point where it wasn’t feeling great,” Suzuki said. “So, just kind of said something like ‘Let’s try not to make it get really bad.’”

Meckler’s injury occurred when he was struck near his right ear by a 90.6 mph sinker from Astros left‑hander Bryan King. The impact left Meckler motionless for a few seconds. Trainers assisted him to his feet, and he was able to walk off the field, but the team opted for the concussion protocol to ensure his health.

Roster moves from Triple‑A Salt Lake

To fill the roster spots opened by the injuries, the Angels recalled two players from their Triple‑A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees. Infielder‑outfielder Christian Moore and outfielder‑catcher Gustavo Campero were added to the major‑league roster and both appeared in the starting lineup for the Saturday night game in Texas.

The moves give the Angels additional depth as they continue their season, while also providing opportunities for Moore and Campero to showcase their versatility at the major‑league level.

Impact on the team

Schanuel, a promising young first baseman, has contributed both offensively and defensively since joining the Angels. His absence will require the club to rely on other infield options, potentially increasing playing time for backup players. Meckler, known for his speed and defensive range in the outfield, will be unavailable for at least a week, prompting the Angels to adjust their outfield rotation.

Both injuries underscore the physical demands of a full MLB season and the importance of roster flexibility. The team will monitor the players’ recoveries closely, with medical staff aiming for a swift and safe return to action.

Looking ahead

The Angels will continue their road swing, with upcoming games against division rivals. Fans can expect the club to lean on its depth and the newly recalled players as it navigates the challenges posed by the injuries. Updates on Schanuel’s and Meckler’s health will be provided by the team as they progress through their respective recovery protocols.
