Las Vegas courtroom hears extensive recordings as prosecutors rest case against Duane Davis in Tupac Shakur murder trial

Las Vegas — After a week and a half of testimony, Clark County prosecutors rested their case Wednesday in the high‑profile murder trial of Duane Davis, also known as “Keffe D,” who they say was involved in the 1996 shooting of rapper Tupac Shakur.

The prosecution relied heavily on recordings in which Davis described his own involvement. Eight hours of audio from four separate sessions – two interviews in 2008‑2009 and two in 2017 – were played for the jury. In each, Davis placed himself in a car beside Shakur on the night of September 7, 1996, and recounted handing a gun to two young men in the back seat.

Key evidence and legal hurdles

While the recordings provide a vivid narrative, the case lacks physical evidence linking Davis to the scene. Former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani noted that DNA, fingerprints and the murder weapon have long since disappeared, making it difficult to corroborate Davis’s statements with independent proof.

Judge Carli Kierny ruled that Davis’s earlier statements – including those from his 2019 memoir “Compton Street Legend” and prior police interviews – are admissible. The defense will now argue that the recordings are inconsistent and that Davis’s story has changed over time.

Family presence and community reaction

Members of Shakur’s family have attended the trial daily, with sister Sekyiwa Shakur visibly moved during a 2017 interview excerpt in which Davis was asked if he wanted to apologize to the family. The courtroom atmosphere reflected the lingering pain and the community’s desire for closure after three decades.

Several potential witnesses, including former Club 662 security head James McDonald and former South Side Crip Denvonta Lee, were ordered to appear after initially refusing to testify voluntarily, underscoring the challenges of prosecuting a cold case.

What’s next?

With the prosecution’s case presented, the defense will begin its arguments. The jury must decide whether Davis’s recorded confessions, without independent corroboration, meet the constitutional standard of proof beyond a reasonable doubt.

The trial continues to draw national attention, highlighting the complexities of seeking justice in a case that has long been shrouded in mystery.
