Lando Norris signs multi‑year extension with McLaren through 2030

In a move that will keep one of Formula 1’s brightest talents on a British‑based team for the foreseeable future, McLaren announced Saturday that Lando Norris has signed a new contract extending his stay until at least the end of 2030, with an option to continue beyond that year.

The announcement comes on the heels of Norris’s victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, a win that reignited talk of a title challenge for the defending Drivers’ Champion. Norris, who entered McLaren’s junior program in 2017 and debuted on the grid in 2019, has become a cornerstone of the team’s recent resurgence.

Contract details and car assignment

Under the terms of the extension, Norris will continue to race the MCL‑39, the car that helped him capture the 2025 Drivers’ Championship. McLaren confirmed that the deal includes a “multi‑year option to commit beyond that date,” giving both driver and team flexibility to plan for the long term.

Driver’s perspective

“McLaren is my home, and I’m very pleased to be signing a new contract to keep me with the team until at least 2030,” Norris said in a statement. “When I started this journey nine years ago, I was clear about the goals I wanted to achieve: to get McLaren back to the front and to win Championships. We’ve achieved that goal, but we want more, we want to keep on winning, and we know as a team that we’re capable of achieving it. I can’t wait to get back in the car in Monza and I’m very excited about what the future holds for us, both over the rest of this season, and in the coming years.”

Team leadership’s view

McLaren CEO Zak Brown echoed Norris’s enthusiasm, calling the partnership a “fantastic example of our commitment to identifying, developing and supporting world‑class talent.” Brown highlighted the driver’s role in helping McLaren secure back‑to‑back Constructors’ titles in 2024 and 2025, as well as the team’s first Drivers’ Championship in 17 years.

“His journey with the team is a testament to what can be achieved when talent, experience and youth are combined,” Brown added. “We are extremely excited about what lies ahead and remain fully focused on continuing to compete for wins and Championships.”

Context within Formula 1

The timing of Norris’s extension mirrors a similar move by Red Bull, which recently secured Max Verstappen through the 2030 season. Both contracts underscore a broader trend in Formula 1 toward long‑term stability for top drivers, allowing teams to build around a consistent core while pursuing technical development.

For McLaren fans, the news provides reassurance that the team’s recent success will not be short‑lived. With Norris and fellow Australian Oscar Piastri forming a young, talented lineup, McLaren appears poised to remain a dominant force on the grid for years to come.
