Lando Norris says McLaren must fix slow‑corner performance to stay title‑contending

British Formula 1 driver Lando Norris told reporters after his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix that, despite back‑to‑back wins and pole positions, his McLaren is not yet ready to fight for the world title. He said the team’s biggest weakness lies in the car’s handling through slow‑speed corners, an area where Mercedes currently holds a clear advantage.

Strengths and weaknesses on the track

Norris highlighted McLaren’s progress in high‑speed sections, noting that the car now out‑performs rivals on the straights and fast corners. “No one matches us in high speed, and that’s a good thing,” he said. However, he added that Mercedes’ edge in low‑speed corners remains “crazy” and must be addressed if McLaren hopes to contend for the championship.

Call for continuous improvement

The driver urged the team not to become complacent after recent successes. “If we can improve on these slow speeds, I’m confident that I can win every race this season,” Norris said. He warned that without such upgrades, the title fight would become far more difficult.

Team perspectives

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella echoed the need for development, suggesting that Mercedes likely has performance‑boosting ideas in reserve. “I’m sure they will now cash in on their development that surely is happening in the background,” Stella said. Meanwhile, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff admitted that budget‑cap restrictions have limited the German squad’s ability to make major changes, making the competition tighter as the season progresses.

Technical and financial constraints

Formula 1’s cost‑cap rules limit how much teams can spend on key design areas, forcing them to prioritize upgrades. McLaren introduced an earlier upgrade that is still taking effect, but the team must decide how much of its remaining budget to allocate toward solving the low‑speed corner issue. As the season advances, teams gain more data and can copy successful ideas from rivals, increasing the pressure to spend wisely.

Looking ahead

With several races remaining, Norris remains optimistic about his personal performance and the team’s ability to adapt. He credited the Dutch win to a “perfect example” of overnight work on car setup, which transformed the race outcome. As McLaren evaluates its development path, the focus will be on extracting maximum performance from the car while staying within the financial limits imposed by the sport’s regulations.
