Lake Helen Boil‑Water Notice Enters Fourth Day; City Distributes Bottled Water and Businesses Adapt

Lake Helen, Fla. – The city’s boil‑water advisory has now stretched into its fourth day, affecting households, restaurants and daily routines across the small Volusia County community. The notice was issued after testing revealed the presence of E. coli in the city’s raw, untreated water source. Officials emphasized that the contaminant was found before the water entered the treatment system, confirming that the city’s chlorination process is functioning as intended.

Impact on Residents

Residents say the advisory has created a significant inconvenience. “It’s a long time. Quite a bit… It’s been quite the discomfort,” said Lake Helen resident David Swaggerty. He added that his wife has been taking dishes to a neighbor outside the city limits to use their dishwasher, illustrating how families are adapting to the restriction on tap water.

Local Business Adjustments

The advisory also forced a popular local café‑restaurant to close for several days. After community members urged the owner to reopen, the establishment resumed service on Wednesday with new safety measures. The restaurant now purchases bagged ice for drinks and uses gallons of bottled water for dishwashing while the boil‑water notice remains in effect. “It’s a really homely home place. It’s kind of everybody gets together here. I mean, it’s just, it’s an awesome restaurant,” said a regular patron.

City‑Led Water Distribution

To help families cope, the city held a drive‑through bottled‑water distribution on Wednesday at the Community Art Center, adjacent to the Lake Helen Police Department. The event ran from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Residents presented a driver’s license, then opened their trunks so city workers could place a case of water inside the vehicle, allowing them to stay in their cars throughout the process. City Administrator John Gant explained, “We’re going to check our driver’s license… They’re not going to get out of their cars. We’re just going to put the water in their cars, and they can go.” The city indicated this could be the final distribution drive if the advisory is lifted later this week.

Testing and Next Steps

City officials say additional rounds of testing are required before the advisory can be lifted. Gant reported a conversation with the Florida Department of Health indicating the city could be cleared to end the boil‑water notice by Thursday afternoon, with the affected well potentially returning to service on Friday. The well is also scheduled for a super‑chlorination treatment as part of the remediation process. After treatment, the water will be retested to confirm it is free of bacteria.

Gant expressed optimism, stating that the detection of E. coli in the raw water, rather than the treated supply, demonstrates the effectiveness of the city’s chlorination system. He added that officials remain hopeful the advisory will be lifted by Thursday, allowing residents to resume normal water use.

Community Response

Despite the inconvenience, many Lake Helen residents appreciate the city’s proactive communication and the collaborative efforts of local businesses to keep services running. The situation underscores the importance of robust municipal water‑quality monitoring and the community’s resilience in the face of public‑health challenges.
