Lake County Commissioners to Consider Ban on License Plate Reader Cameras

Lake County, Fla. – The Lake County Commission is set to weigh a complete ban on license plate reader (LPR) cameras during its September 1 meeting in Tavares. The agenda item, added by Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, calls for rescinding the county’s prior authorization that allowed LPRs to be installed in public right‑of‑ways.

Commissioner pushes for repeal

“It’s ridiculous,” Sabatini said. “It should be illegal. It needs to be shut down.” He noted the original decision pre‑dated his tenure, adding, “This will be the first time we consider going back and getting rid of that terrible decision.” The discussion will focus on directing the county to withdraw the earlier permission for LPR deployment.

Timeline of LPR requests

Lake County officials provided a timeline of requests for LPR equipment, beginning in August 2022 when Sheriff Peyton Grinnell presented the technology to the commission. Subsequent requests came from the Lake County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) in August and October 2022, February 2024, and September 2024, followed by requests from Mount Dora, Fruitland Park, and the Town of Lady Lake on February 10, 2026.

Law‑enforcement perspective

While the Lake County Police Department does not own LPR hardware, Police Chief Sarah Coursey confirmed the department accesses the technology for major investigations. “I believe license plate readers are a valuable law‑enforcement tool that can help us solve serious crimes, locate missing persons, and protect our communities,” Coursey said. “At the same time, I recognize the importance of appropriate oversight, accountability, and safeguards to ensure the technology is used responsibly and respects the privacy and constitutional rights of the public.”

Public‑privacy debate

Supporters of the ban argue that LPRs pose a threat to privacy and could be used to infringe on constitutional liberties without sufficient oversight. Opponents contend that the cameras assist in recovering stolen vehicles, locating missing or endangered children, and identifying wanted individuals, as highlighted in a 2022 letter from Sheriff Grinnell.

The commission meeting will begin at 9 a.m. on September 1 in the Board Chambers at the Lake County Government Center in Tavares. No response had been received from the sheriff’s office at the time of reporting.
