Los Angeles – The LA28 organizing committee announced Friday that ticket sales for the 2028 Olympic Games have surpassed 6 million, just two years before the event returns to the city for a historic third time. The figure includes purchases from 129 countries and territories, underscoring the global appeal of the upcoming Games.
Ticket sales breakdown
Among the tickets sold, more than 700,000 were purchased at the $28 “bargain” level, and nearly one‑quarter of all tickets were priced under $100. The sales data comes from the second ticket‑sale phase, known as Drop 2, which concluded earlier this week.
What’s next for fans
LA28 said additional ticket opportunities will be offered in 2027 on a first‑come, first‑serve basis. The committee also announced that the ticket‑purchase limits that applied to the first two drops will be lifted, allowing fans to buy as many tickets as they wish, subject to availability. A specific date for the 2027 sales has not yet been set.
In addition to Olympic tickets, the organization confirmed that the first chance to purchase Paralympic tickets will also be available in 2027, giving supporters of athletes with disabilities early access.
Comparison with Paris 2024
For context, the Paris 2024 Games sold about 1.89 million tickets during its Drop 2 phase in May 2023, bringing the total to roughly 5.39 million tickets with one year remaining before the event.
Event schedule highlights
The LA 2028 Opening Ceremony is scheduled for July 14, 2028, with competitions running through July 30. The Paralympic Games will open on August 15 and close on August 27. The first sports to begin competition are field hockey, basketball, rugby sevens, water polo, handball and cricket, kicking off on July 12, two days before the opening ceremony.
Day 1 of full competition begins on July 15, featuring a triathlon medal ceremony on Venice Beach. Notably, the traditional order of track and field and swimming events has been swapped: track and field will take place at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum during the first week, while swimming will move to SoFi Stadium in the second week. The marathon events remain slated for the final weekend.
New and returning sports
The 2028 program adds 22 medal events compared with Paris 2024, bringing the total to 351. New mixed‑team events include artistic gymnastics, a 4×100 mixed‑gender relay in athletics, mixed team golf, mixed team archery with compound bows, coastal rowing beach sprint, and mixed team table tennis. Women’s soccer and water polo fields are expanding, a new women’s boxing weight class is added, and 3×3 basketball will feature a larger field.
Flag football makes its Olympic debut, lacrosse returns after more than a century, and baseball and softball rejoin the roster. Cricket also remains on the lineup.
Looking ahead
LA28 officials emphasized that the ticket sales momentum is only the beginning. “The demand we’ve seen across both drops is a powerful signal that the world is energized for LA28,” said LA28 Chairperson and President Casey Wasserman. “We’re grateful to every fan who participated, and we’re just getting started—2027 will bring more inventory, more access and more ways to be part of the greatest sporting event the world has seen.”
