La Plata County in southwestern Colorado has moved to Stage 2 fire restrictions as the wildfire risk intensifies. The restrictions, which take effect on June 26, apply to unincorporated areas of La Plata County and county-owned lands, but do not apply within the city limits of Durango, the towns of Bayfield or Ignacio, or on federal or tribal lands.
Restrictions and Prohibitions
Under the Stage 2 restrictions, open burning, campfires, burn barrels, charcoal grills, and wood- or coal-burning stoves are prohibited. However, propane or pressurized gas grills and stoves with shut-off valves are permitted, while pellet smokers may only be used on private property if they have an enclosed combustion chamber and are operated within a 20-foot vegetation-free safety zone.
Other prohibited or restricted activities include smoking outside of enclosed vehicles or buildings, welding and metal grinding without authorization and the required fire safety measures, the use of fireworks or other explosive devices, and the operation of internal combustion engines that are not equipped with approved spark arrestors.
Officials warned that anyone who violates the fire restrictions may face fines beginning at $500 for a first offense, increasing to $750 for a second violation and $1,000 for a third and subsequent offenses. Violators may also be held financially responsible for wildfire suppression costs and property damage resulting from their actions.
