Kwik Star to phase out roller grills, keep popular grab‑and‑go snacks in Iowa stores

Des Moines, Iowa — Kwik Star, the regional convenience‑store chain, is eliminating its roller‑grill stations after a recent case study revealed that customers in the area favor quick, grab‑and‑go snack options over the traditional roller‑grill menu.

“People who like our Tornados or the roller bites or the hot dogs or brats, those items will still be available on the hotspot. They’re not going away. But they will just be individually wrapped and packaged,” said Ben Leibl, public‑relations specialist for Kwik Star.

The decision reflects a broader shift in consumer behavior toward convenience and hygiene. Shoppers increasingly seek items they can pick up and eat without waiting for a grill to finish cooking. By moving these popular items to a pre‑packaged format, Kwik Star aims to reduce wait times, improve food safety, and better align its offerings with what customers actually want.

What stays the same

Kwik Star emphasized that the core snack lineup will remain unchanged. The chain’s signature Tornado pizza rolls, hot dogs, bratwursts, and other roller‑grill favorites will still be stocked on the “hotspot” shelves throughout its stores. The only difference is that each product will be individually wrapped, allowing shoppers to grab a snack and go.

What’s next for Kwik Star

When asked about what will replace the roller‑grill stations, Leibl said the company is still evaluating options and will share details when a decision is finalized. The statement suggests that Kwik Star may explore new product categories or expand existing ones, but no concrete plans were disclosed at this time.

Industry analysts note that Kwik Star’s move is consistent with trends seen across the convenience‑store sector nationwide. As consumers prioritize speed, safety, and portability, many chains are rethinking traditional food‑service models that rely on on‑site cooking.

Local store owners have expressed optimism that the change will boost sales. “Our customers love the quick‑service items, and now they’ll get them faster and cleaner,” said a Kwik Star franchisee in Cedar Rapids. “We expect the shift to keep our shelves stocked with the foods people actually want.”

Kwik Star’s decision also aligns with broader efforts to modernize the convenience‑store experience, including the rollout of digital ordering kiosks, expanded beverage selections, and enhanced loyalty programs.

For now, Iowa shoppers can continue to enjoy their favorite Kwik Star snacks, just packaged in a way that matches today’s fast‑paced lifestyle.
