Clovis, Calif. – Kuppa Joy, the region’s longest‑running Christian coffee chain, has turned a simple piece of furniture into a bold statement of faith. Every full‑size Kuppa Joy location – from the original Old Town Clovis shop to the newer Cedar and Shepherd café – features a throne mounted on the wall or hanging from the ceiling, a visual reminder that “the true source of joy comes from God, who is seated on the throne.”
From NFL Linebacker to Coffee Entrepreneur
Founder and owner Zack Follett’s journey began on the football field. A former middle linebacker at Clovis High School, the University of California‑Berkeley and the Detroit Lions, Follett earned the nickname “the Pain Train.” A severe helmet‑to‑helmet hit in 2010 left him temporarily paralyzed, and after a brief stint as an NFL analyst in London, he found himself in a Costa Coffee shop in Marlow, England. The kindness of the barista and the sense of fellowship sparked what Follett describes as a divine prompting to open a coffee shop back home.
“God came to me with a plan for my non‑football future,” Follett says. “I wasn’t a big coffee drinker, but the experience lifted a natural joy I felt.” That joy became the name of his business – Kuppa Joy – and the foundation for a brand that blends premium coffee with unabashed Christian symbolism.
Why a Throne?
When Follett set out to design a logo, he wanted something that would stand out among the many Christian cafés that rely on crosses. “The cross is obviously the main source of our Christian faith, but it’s played out everywhere,” he explains. “I wanted a visual that broke through the usual stigma and reminded people that God reigns on a throne.” The result is a throne‑shaped logo and, eventually, actual thrones installed in each full‑size café.
Local chocolatier Guy Debbas, a childhood neighbor, encouraged the idea. “You need this throne in your café,” Debbas told Follett, prompting the entrepreneur to seek a throne maker. After locating a Texas‑based dealer, Elegant Accents, that imports handcrafted thrones from Asia, Follett ordered the pieces, enduring a six‑month lead time before the first throne arrived.
Faith‑Forward Branding Meets Quality Coffee
Kuppa Joy’s interior décor is unapologetically Christian – Biblical word art, drink names referencing Scripture, and cup graphics that include scenes such as Jesus on the cross. Yet the coffee itself is marketed as “genuinely high‑end,” aiming to fill a gap Follett saw in other faith‑based cafés that often fell short on quality.
“Before Kuppa Joy opened, I tried reading my Bible in public at Starbucks and felt the stares,” Follett recalls. “I wanted a place where believers could enjoy great coffee and study the Word without discomfort.” The throne, then, serves both as branding and as a conversation starter for patrons seeking a worship‑friendly environment.
Community Response
Reactions have been mixed, as any distinctive branding can be. Some locals initially called the throne “dumb” or likened it to furniture store décor. Others, especially families and church groups, appreciate the clear proclamation of faith. “The throne makes our cafés instantly recognizable and reminds us why we gather,” says a regular customer who prefers to remain unnamed.
Beyond the visual impact, Kuppa Joy continues to expand, now operating eight locations and employing dozens of residents across Fresno County. The chain’s growth demonstrates that a business rooted in Christian values can thrive while delivering a product that meets the expectations of discerning coffee drinkers.
Looking Ahead
Follett remains focused on expanding the brand while staying true to its mission. Future plans include adding more “Joy‑Thru” drive‑through kiosks, though those will continue without thrones, preserving the unique experience for sit‑down patrons.
“Our goal is to bring joy to the community, both through great coffee and a reminder of God’s reign,” Follett says. “If a throne on the wall helps people see that, then it’s worth every effort.”
