Red Lodge, Mont. – Early Wednesday morning residents gathered at the town’s skate park after spotting emergency lights and hearing the buzz of wildlife crews. What they soon discovered was a surprising sight: a massive bull moose standing helplessly in the concrete bowl of the skate park.
Local families watch the rescue unfold
While taking their children to school, Red Lodge parents Christian and Laura Stone noticed the flashing lights and stopped to see what was happening. “I was wondering what was going on. Oftentimes it’s somebody getting hurt over here but not typically a moose,” Laura Stone told local outlet KTVQ.
Steve Langlas, a longtime Red Lodge resident, and his wife Missy also watched the scene. “We’ve seen a lot of animals in town, never a moose in the bottom of a skate park,” Langlas said.
Authorities and wildlife officials respond
Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officers arrived with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office, Red Lodge Fire Rescue and Red Lodge Police. Initial attempts to coax the moose out of the concrete bowl proved unsuccessful, prompting officials to use a tranquilizer to calm the animal.
Once sedated, the moose was carefully lifted and moved out of the skate park. The park, along with surrounding streets, was temporarily closed while the operation took place.
Moose known to the community
Local resident Sam Merrick identified the animal as a familiar “town moose” that often wanders near Red Lodge. “The moose is around. It’s kind of known as our local moose,” Merrick said. He added, “We’re all looking for a safe resolve to the whole situation because he is the town moose. We’d like to see him wandering around or going back into the hills at some point again.”
After the tranquilizer wore off, the moose was released outside town limits, where it is expected to return to its natural habitat in the surrounding hills.
Community reaction
The unexpected wildlife encounter sparked a light‑hearted moment for the small town. Residents joked that the incident might have been avoided if the moose had brought a skateboard of its own.
Red Lodge officials reminded citizens that while wildlife sightings are common in the area, it is important to keep a safe distance and allow trained professionals to handle any unusual situations.
What’s next for the skate park?
The skate park will reopen once officials confirm the area is safe and any equipment disturbed during the rescue has been restored. The incident serves as a reminder of the close relationship between Red Lodge’s residents and the surrounding natural environment.
