KOAT is hosting its sixth annual live book drive today at Barnes & Noble locations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe to collect new and gently used children’s books for kids across the state.

Donations of new and gently used children’s books are being collected at Barnes & Noble locations in Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Organizers are asking for children’s books but note that textbooks and encyclopedias are not accepted.

Kathy Chilton, a volunteer with Read to Me, a literacy organization, explained the impact books can have on children. “Having books read to them or reading their own books gives them a much bigger vocabulary. It gives them access to ideas that they might not have had before. They can learn about other children’s lives. They can learn to see themselves in a book,” Chilton said.

Last year, the book drive collected 27,000 books and $1,100 in donations. Organizers hope to collect even more this year.
