Khachanov advances to US Open semi-finals after Blockx retires

New York – The US Open’s men’s draw took a dramatic turn on Wednesday at Flushing Meadows when Alexander Blockx was forced to retire, handing 30‑year‑old Karen Khachanov a spot in the semi‑finals. Blockx, the first Belgian man to reach the quarter‑finals at the tournament, had been battling a rib injury and visible discomfort throughout the match.

Trailing 6‑2, 7‑5, 3‑2, Blockx wore a brace on his right ankle and had his thigh wrapped, calling for his trainer twice. Despite his determination, the injury proved too much, and after one hour and 38 minutes he conceded the match, allowing Khachanov to advance.

Khachanov’s resurgence

Khachanov, seeded 28th, expressed confidence after the win. “I was preparing really well for that match. It’s not easy because I feel I was dominating, then I saw he was struggling more and more,” he said on court. “He was suffering, but I wanted to keep the energy there. I wish him a speedy recovery but I’m super happy I’m in the semis.”

The Russian, a former world number eight, has not reached a Grand Slam semi‑final since the Australian Open in 2023. He also returns to a major’s final‑four stage for the first time since the 2022 US Open, marking a notable comeback after a period of lower rankings.

Path to the last eight

Khachanov’s run in New York has been impressive. He eliminated third seed Felix Auger‑Aliassime and 14th seed Learner Tien en route to the quarter‑finals. His aggressive baseline play and renewed confidence have resonated with fans who have followed his career resurgence.

Now, Khachanov will face either top‑seed Alexander Zverev or Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp in the semi‑finals. Both opponents have displayed strong form, setting up a compelling contest for a spot in the championship match.

Blockx’s injury outlook

Blockx, 21, suffered the rib injury earlier in the tournament and had been managing pain with a brace and thigh wrap. While his early exit is disappointing, he remains optimistic about recovery. “I’ll be back stronger,” he told reporters, emphasizing his commitment to future Grand Slam events.

The US Open continues to showcase a mix of seasoned veterans and rising talent, underscoring the tournament’s reputation as a proving ground for the sport’s next generation.

Fans can watch the upcoming semi‑finals live on national television and via streaming platforms, with the final scheduled for Saturday.
