Kentucky Temporarily Closes Driver Licensing Offices for System Upgrade

Kentucky residents planning to renew their driver’s licenses should act swiftly, as all regional driver licensing offices will temporarily close on Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5. This closure is part of the state’s transition to a new driver licensing system, replacing the nearly 40-year-old infrastructure with a modernized version aimed at expanding online services and improving customer service.

Introducing myDrive

The new system will launch alongside myDrive, an online portal designed to streamline the process for Kentuckians. Through myDrive, residents can pre-apply for licenses, permits, and IDs, request replacement cards, check their license status, and access additional services. KYTC Secretary Rebecca Goodman expressed enthusiasm for the upgrade, stating, “We’re excited to roll out new services to better serve Kentuckians and modernize how we do business for decades to come.”

Residents can begin registering for a myDrive account starting Monday, June 8. State officials recommend creating an account early to save time, as some users may need to request verification through mail.

Plan Ahead for Renewals

Drivers with licenses or ID cards expiring in June are encouraged to visit an office before the temporary closure. Online renewals will also be unavailable starting Wednesday, June 3, but are set to resume on Monday, June 8, the same day regional offices are scheduled to reopen.

When the offices reopen, they will operate on a limited schedule from 8 a.m. to noon through Thursday, June 18. For those scheduling road or written tests with the Kentucky State Police, pre-applying for licenses or permits via myDrive is advised to ensure a smooth process.

Additional information about office hours, services, and myDrive can be found on the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet’s website.
