Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear is demanding transparency regarding Senator Mitch McConnell’s capacity to serve in the U.S. Senate. McConnell, 84, has not cast a vote since being hospitalized seven weeks ago, and his office has only released two photos of him since then.

Gov. Beshear is putting the responsibility for determining McConnell’s capacity on Senate leaders, stating that a vacancy can only be declared by the U.S. Senate itself. If the seat is declared vacant, a special election would be held, according to a 2024 state law.
Beshear emphasized that the decision on McConnell’s capacity is not his to make, saying, ‘John Thune, the majority leader, needs to determine Mitch’s capacity, whether he has it or not. And if he doesn’t, they need to take action in that Senate.’
