Kentucky residents should prepare for a temporary closure of all Driver Licensing Regional Offices on June 4 and 5 as the state implements a new driver licensing system. The offices are set to reopen on June 8, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.
Modernizing State Services
The upgrade aims to replace a nearly 40-year-old platform, modernizing how the state serves its residents. Kentucky Transportation Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Goodman emphasized the long-term benefits of the new system, stating, “We’re excited to roll out new services to better serve Kentuckians and modernize how we do business for decades to come.”
Residents with licenses or IDs expiring in June are advised to visit an office before the closure to avoid any inconvenience. The new system will also launch myDrive, an online portal where Kentuckians can pre-apply for licenses, permits, or IDs, request card replacements, and check their current license status.
Encouragement to Use myDrive
State officials encourage all residents to create a myDrive account, even if they do not have immediate licensing needs. Account verification may require a secure code sent by mail, so setting up an account early is recommended to save time later.
For those who have scheduled road or written tests with the Kentucky State Police, pre-applying for a license or permit through myDrive before their appointment is advised.
Additional details about office hours, services, and the myDrive portal can be found at drive.ky.gov.
