Kaptur rallies Toledo students and union members to boost early voting in Lucas County

TOLEDO, Ohio – On Tuesday, Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D) joined a crowd of University of Toledo students and local union members at the Lucas County Early Vote Center. The event, held a week before the November 5 election, was aimed at encouraging early voting in Ohio’s 9th Congressional District, a race that has become one of the nation’s closest contests.

Early voting push targets first‑time and college voters

Kaptur emphasized that turnout among first‑time voters and college students could be decisive. “They can make a difference for the country. They will remember this election,” she told the assembled crowd.

A student speaker echoed the sentiment, saying, “We are already here today to show Northwest Ohio that our generation is fired up, motivated and getting out to vote in this election.”

Redrawn district leans more Republican

The 9th District was recently redrawn in a way that favors Republican candidates. Kaptur noted the frequent redistricting, asking, “What member of Congress is gerrymandered three times in a decade? They’re trying to rig the system, just like they tried to rig the tax code and take health insurance away from our people.”

She added that healthcare costs and farm expenses remain top concerns for voters. “Farmers right now are very worried about their bottom line because of the price of all the inputs that have skyrocketed, including because of the tariffs. But do you know what they ask me for first? Health insurance,” Kaptur said.

Democratic leadership joins the effort

Rep. Suzan DelBene (D‑WA), chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, attended the event alongside Kaptur. DelBene warned that her party’s opponents were “worried. They know they’re losing because they have nothing to say. They’re not talking about costs, or healthcare, or the challenges that workers and farmers are facing in this community.”

Republican counter‑campaign rolls out

Speaker Mike Johnson (R‑LA) is scheduled to return to the 9th District on Wednesday for a rally with Republican challenger Derek Merrin, a former state representative. Johnson previously praised Merrin’s campaign, noting that a narrow 0.7 % margin kept Merrin out of office last cycle, a result he attributed in part to a third‑party spoiler.

“He’s running an exceptional campaign and he’s bringing common sense to the equation,” Johnson said on Oct. 8.

What voters should know

The Early Vote Center in Lucas County remains open through the weekend, offering extended hours for residents who prefer to vote before Election Day. Voters can bring a valid photo ID and a completed ballot to any of the county’s early voting sites.

Local election officials remind voters that early voting helps reduce lines on November 5 and provides a convenient option for those with busy schedules. The county’s Board of Elections encourages all eligible residents to take advantage of the early voting period.

Looking ahead

With the district’s new boundaries and a highly competitive race, both campaigns are intensifying outreach efforts. Community groups, faith‑based organizations, and local businesses are also stepping up to inform voters about their options.

As the election approaches, the focus will remain on issues that matter most to Lucas County residents: affordable healthcare, farm sustainability, and economic stability. Early voting numbers will be closely watched as an early indicator of turnout trends in this pivotal congressional contest.
