Kansas Senate Race Tightens as Trump and V.P. Vance Back Incumbent Marshall

Kansas voters are watching a surprisingly close U.S. Senate contest as former independent candidate Greg Orman weighs in on the dynamics shaping the race between Republican incumbent Roger Marshall and Democratic challenger Adam Hamilton. The race, long considered a safe Republican seat, has drawn national attention after President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance publicly endorsed Marshall.

Local campaigning and national endorsements

Hamilton spent the past week touring the state, including a stop in Kansas City, Kansas, where supporters emphasized the need for a senator who would act as a “check and balance” on President Trump. “Be a check and balance for him and make sure the American people see relief when it comes to gas prices and food,” said Wyandotte County voter Darryl Bagley.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has turned its focus to Kansas, with both the president and the vice president appearing at campaign events. Vance told a Topeka rally, “You have the opportunity to reelect my dear friend Roger Marshall.” Trump, speaking near Wichita, urged voters to consider Marshall as a proxy for his own agenda, saying, “Pretend, please, that I’m on the ballot. Just pretend.”

Orman’s perspective on the shifting landscape

Greg Orman, who ran as an independent in 2014, predicts a tight race, citing recent polling that shows President Trump’s popularity slipping in the state. He noted that the two candidates differ sharply on their stance toward Trump, which could drive higher voter turnout. “Now, I think we’re seeing very different candidates and a perception elections are consequential, and I believe that’s leading more people to vote,” Orman said.

Orman also observed that Republican enthusiasm appears muted, which may explain why the president and vice president have placed Kansas high on their campaign calendars. “Republicans don’t seem nearly as motivated, which is one of the reasons you’ve seen the president and vice president put Kansas on their dance card,” he explained.

Historical context and the stakes

Kansas has not elected a Democrat to the U.S. Senate since 1932. Hamilton hopes to end that streak, while Marshall seeks a second term. The race reflects a broader trend in traditionally red states such as Texas, Alaska, and Mississippi, where Democrats are narrowing margins in Senate contests.

Both campaigns are emphasizing issues that resonate with Kansas families: lower gas prices, food affordability, and protecting traditional values. Hamilton’s bus tour aims to connect directly with voters, while Marshall’s campaign leans on the backing of the Trump administration to rally the Republican base.

What voters can expect

As the election approaches, Kansas voters will decide whether the historic Democratic drought can be broken or if the incumbent, bolstered by national Republican leadership, will retain the seat. Local observers suggest that turnout will be the decisive factor, especially given the heightened attention from the White House.

For more in‑depth analysis, KSHB 41 News anchor Lindsay Shively and Dr. Abigail Vegter, assistant professor of political science at William Jewell College, discussed the race in a 20‑minute interview now available online.
