Justin Verlander makes emotional final appearance for Detroit Tigers

Detroit – On Saturday night, Comerica Park was filled with cheers as longtime pitcher Justin Verlander took the mound for the final time in his 21‑year Major League Baseball career. The 43‑year‑old right‑hander, a three‑time Cy Young Award winner, made his debut on July 4, 2005, and returned to the Tigers for a farewell appearance against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Final innings and family tribute

Verlander threw five complete innings, allowing two solo home runs while striking out six batters. He faced one batter in the sixth, recorded an out, and then stepped off the mound to a standing ovation. His daughter, Genevieve, greeted him on the rubber, and shortly after, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch collected the ball for the last time from the veteran ace.

Following the game, Verlander’s wife, model Kate Upton, and son Bellamy joined Genevieve on the field, walking down the dugout steps together as the crowd continued to applaud. The emotional moment highlighted the deep connection between the Verlander family and Detroit fans.

Career milestones

Over 557 career starts, Verlander amassed 3,566 strikeouts, ranking eighth all‑time in Major League Baseball. His résumé includes two World Series championships with the Houston Astros, a Rookie of the Year award, a Comeback Player of the Year honor, ten All‑Star selections, five American League strikeout titles, four AL wins titles, and two AL ERA titles.

After leaving Detroit in 2017, Verlander returned for a second stint with the Tigers in 2023. He missed the start of the 2026 season due to injuries, with his last appearance before this farewell occurring on March 30.

Legacy in Detroit

Verlander’s final game was a reminder of his lasting impact on the Tigers franchise and the city’s baseball heritage. Fans and former teammates gathered for hugs, and the sold‑out crowd sang his name, underscoring the respect he earned throughout his career.

While his playing days conclude, Verlander’s contributions to the sport—both on the mound and as a mentor to younger pitchers—will be remembered by Detroit’s baseball community for years to come.
